American Horse School is located in Allen, SD on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. Allen is a small community of about 465 people. Our community has a Head Start, School Post Office, Cap Office, Elderly Center, OLC college center and gas/convenience store. Allen is 20 minutes from Martin SD, 1 hour from Gordon, NE and 2 hours from Rapid City SD.
Our students and community members are primarily Oglala Lakota. American Horse School serves three reservation districts. Our staff is composed of local Oglala Sioux Tribal members, non-members, individual’s from across the US and even some from overseas.

* Request for Proposal IDEA Services
American Horse School is accepting a proposal for technical assistance on the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) for School Year 25/26. Proposals are to be written for the period from August 1, 2025, through June 30, 2026. The purpose of the Request for Proposal (RFP) is to solicit proposals from various candidates, conduct a fair evaluation based on the prescribed criteria, and select the candidate who is best for the children the school serves. Applicants are expected to hold a master's in education, have five or more years of experience working in a Bureau of Indian Education (BIE) funded school, five or more years of experience as a Special Education Director, which included supervision of staff, and understand the BIE’s policy and procedures for IDEA. Contractor will be expected to provide technical assistance to the American Horse Special Education staff, provide mentoring for the Lead Teacher all areas related to direct and related services, provide technical assistance on the Native American Student Information Service (NASIS), track compliance to IDEA timelines for evaluations and Individual Education Plans (IEP), complete file reviews to assist with compliance to Indian School Equalization Program (ISEP), provide support for school administration with the completion of the IDEA Spending Plan, provide support for the Lead Special Education Teacher and Business Manager to assist with the appropriate use of the ISEP Special Education funds and the IDEA Part B funds, and technical assistance with other IDEA issues as they occur during the contract period. Deadline to submit the RFP is July 15, 2025 by 5:00 PM (MTN).
